Road haulage companies around the world are all too aware of the growing challenges facing the haulage industry, with perhaps the greatest challenge of them all being a complete modernisation and digitisation of the industry across the board.
Overcoming this singular challenge presented by the traditional mindset can instigate a domino effect that enables road haulage companies to innovate haulage solutions that solve the many other challenges facing the haulage industry. Challenges such as rising fuel costs, carbon emission goals, and driver shortages. Challenges such as minimising empty runs that increase costs and emissions without generating any income.
All of these challenges facing both international haulage companies and UK haulage companies have a solution in the form of digital tools and automation. However, to innovate haulage solutions such as these requires the overcoming of the traditional mindset which continues to impact the productivity of all road haulage companies, even those who are pioneering digitisation.
In this article we explore the reasons behind the endurance of the traditional mindset to shine a light on how we can overcome it, and ultimately move the haulage industry into a new age of digital efficiency.
Reliance On Manual Processes
There are still many road haulage companies who continue to use paper-based systems for tracking shipments and managing logistics. This approach is time-consuming and prone to error, as well as incredibly inefficient compared to digital solutions.
Resistance To Technology
The haulage industry’s traditional mindset about the benefits and reliability of digital tools and automation is a generally sceptical one, mostly due to a lack of familiarity with
this new and intimidating technology. Such resistance stemming from a lack of understanding of how technology can improve operations, along with a fear of the
unknown, can only be overcome by diving in and embracing. We don’t overcome a fear of deep water by just dipping our toes in. We’ve got to get wet.
Preference For Established Methods
Similarly, a strong attachment to the traditional methods is often because of their familiarity and the fact they have been used successfully in the past. This inflexible mindset can hinder innovation and adaptation to modern business needs. There are still too many in the haulage industry who are reluctant to adapt to new business models or market demands, preferring to stick with what has worked previously, even if it’s less efficient or profitable.
They should consider that road haulage companies and the world itself would look very different today if we just kept riding horses and carts because they were familiar and always worked well enough in the past.
Short-Term Focus
This aspect of the traditional mindset is something of a philosophical dilemma, as it can make a certain sense to focus on immediate cost savings. However, the benefits of longer-term investments in technology and infrastructure can absolutely dwarf the savings made in the short-term. Such short-term thinking can prevent road haulage companies from future-proofing themselves from economic instability and volatile markets.
Lack Of Training
Investing in modernisation requires an ongoing commitment, and so far there is insufficient emphasis placed on continuous training and upskilling. Technology is constantly evolving meaning employees will need further training to effectively use new tools and systems, and this is yet another sticking point for the traditional mindset.
However, the digital haulage innovations that are already available should be considered a foundation upon which the haulage industry can continue to build and innovate haulage solutions that massively boost efficiency and productivity.
